Following the publication of our guidance for the responsible development of Generative AI in music, WIN director and AIM Chief Policy Officer & interim CEO Gee Davy explains in Music Ally why we need a global, joined-up approach to policy in this area. A great take from a technology optimist on how good operators and the innovative global independent music sector can connect constructively to drive future generations of groundbreaking music.
My experience of technology and developers is that it is a field full of enthusiastic, visionary, creative people, just like music. GenAI in music has the potential to be exciting and creatively enhancing if it can be developed in a safe, respectful and ethical way. This is why we need a joined-up approach globally. That’s how we can celebrate and engage with the good operators. WIN has provided a roadmap to achieve this. For policymakers to support innovation in both technology and local culture and assist their creative economy. For the global independent community to have a clear and empowered voice on GenAI. And for GenAI developers to constructively connect with the innovative global independent music sector and help drive forward future generations of groundbreaking music.
Gee Davy, AIM Chief Policy Officer & interim CEO
Our Principles for Generative AI is a call for a joined-up approach on GenAI through high global standards and collaboration. This new guidance from the recording independent music community outines five key principles: respect for copyright; prioritization of a human-centered approach; a focus on the safety of creators, fans, consumers and the public; transparency as a fundamental element; and a call for engagement through ethical development hand-in-hand with music.
